I seem to recall that someone at the time told me there had been three newbies assigned to guard duty at one position and that they had all fallen asleep, which made it very easy for the sappers to get in. Obviously someone made a fatal assignment error. The 156th always assigned a new guy on guard duty with two who had pulled it before. Sappers were always out there beyond the fence line. You would hear them , cutting wire, probing. You'd call the searchlight truck from TOC and then find nothing, but no one who'd been there before would have nodded off. Casualty count was, I think, eight, of which those newbies were three. Poor bastards never had a chance.
