Hello folks. I've been following the threads for some time and thought I'd come out of hiding. I was in the 156th from April 68 to March 69. Being a 33G20 (EW/SIGINT systems repairman) I was assigned to the Communications and Electronics repair shop next to the hanger and worked for Big Fred Von Haden. Received my SP/4 promotion from Maj Munson as a blood stripe from one of our mechanics that had stolen the Air Field Commanders jeep and wrecked it down town. He was demoted from e4 to E3 and I was promoted on the same set of orders. Other guys in our shop were Larry Shumacher, John Sorenson, Craig White, John Kinshey and others including a civilian avionics tech named Terry Morin. We were billeted in the same barracks as the aircraft mechanics. Josh Rogers and Gene Campbell were a couple of the mechanics names I remember. McMurtrey was our shop TAMMS clerk until he was transferred to flight ops. I think he used to make the taxi run to the officer's billets in Can Tho for our pilots I was also there during the January 69 sapper attack. Had some gruisome pictures until my wife disposed of them.
Went to Ft Devens (USASATC&S) to Dept 6 and was in the section that trained ARDF pilots at the airfield. Stayed with the unit when it moved to Ft Huachuca in '70. Ended up again in the 156th when it returned to Ft Bliss TX. Finally moved on from my aviation days and had some pretty interesting assignments until retired from the Army as a warrant officer 285A in '87.
Still close to the military working as a Government civilian on army satellite sysytems supporting the intelleigence community..
A lot of time has gone by but memories of those days are still very clear. Hope eveyone is doing OK. Later....THOP
