Gee, I seem to remember incoming mortar fire about every other night when I was there (this was right after the Tet Offensive). And, yes, I recall waking up, running for the bunker before the first one hit. You could hearthe pop when it came out of the tube. We had one guy who was so scared of the mortars (a Regular Army guy, not ASA) that he took to sleeping in the bunker, caught pneumonia and damn near died of that instead.
