I was taxiing a Beaver out of the "north 40" one day and started hearing mortar rounds going off. I would hear them, then an "echo" over the tower's open mike. I concluded that they were landing closer to me than they were to the tower. We chopped it and abandoned the aircraft before it stopped rolling.
I was running toward a sandbagged conex thinking it was a bunker. Someone yelled "that's ammo" and I made a 90-degree turn at full speed on loose gravel without breaking stride. Wound up under a desk with the ops sergeant, Jim Katon. I often thought about you guys, surrounded by all that glass, the most prominent place on the compound.
