On 1 April 1970, three friends and I were playing poker in the barracks, when we heard there was a weapon in the barracks (they had taken them out the month before), we called to the people to get it out of the barracks, and went back to our game. Then a shot came, and Dave Schmidt who was sitting in the door way, fell to his right and a large stream of blood was coming out of his back, all over me and the table. SSG Barnett (NCOIC RTT Site) had brought a .45 Cal grease gun into the barracks and being drunk and screwing around with it, he ran into the door way across the hall from us and the bolt slamed home, only one bullet was fired. David died on the floor within seconds. His boyhood friend (can't remember his name) was one of the people in the room, when he died.
