I was reviewing the new messages on this site and ran across your question concerning the militia at Cantho. I worked for CORDS IV Corp in 6-69 to 6-70. One of the Divisions of CORDS had a group of Vietnamese that dressed in black. They did however have a green patch on the left front of their shirt that identified them as RD Cadremen. I was told that they were train by the US to go in the VC controlled Villages and waste the local leader ship just as the VC had done to the SouthVietnamese. The reason I found out about them is because I had the same experience you did one night. I was riding shotgun on our water truck coming back from the Can Tho Air field to Eadkin Compound when the SOB's came runing out of an ally in Can Tho near the MP compound.
