I remember during my 1968-1970 stint at Can Tho, working the 12 hour shift from 1900 to 0700 and then catching a ride into town to the USO, where we used to get ham and egg and cheese sandwiches, rather than eating in the mess hall. We did this maybe once a week.
There was a candy store ("Confectionary") directly across the street from the USO. My first experience with the street kids almost cost me my wallet. While they clustered around me as I bought them candy, one of them slit the back pocket of my fatigues with a razor blade and almost lifted my wallet. Pissed me off, but I guess it was survival. Still, I never bought em candy anymore.
